Would you replace a burnt out headlight with a hammer? Would you repair a broken leg with a hammer? If the only tool you have is a hammer, then every problem looks like a nail. This analogy couldn’t be more spot in the fitness world. Think about it; if you have disc issues in your back would you go to a trainer that specializes in powerlifting? If you are trying to get back in shape after years of inactivity, would you go to a facility that specializes in super high intensity workouts? None of these sound logical yet it happens every day. At Results, we have many different tools for many different problems.
A few years ago we were the first fitness facility in South Dakota to implement the Functional Movement Screen. This is a 7 movement screen that allows us to assess your movement patterns and capabilities so we can find weak links and prescribe the right exercises to guarantee success and avoid injury. For example, if someone fails shoulder mobility, or has pain in that area, we get to the root of the problem, avoid exercises that risk injury or pain, and shore up the weak links. This helps us get the body out of the way of itself and move more efficiently. If you can move the way you did as a child then magically strength happens, and magically endurance happens. When that happens… so does your fitness goal.
Years ago we were the first facility in South Dakota to have kettlebells. Since then they’ve become insanely popular and you can find them in almost every fitness facility in America, as well as on most fitness TV shows. Over the last few years Results has taught other trainers around the country on proper kettlebell implementation. We’ve even hosted a sold out intense certification with many trainers flying in from all over the US. Just because we’re the leader in kettlebells doesn’t mean everyone that trains at Results will swing a kettlebell. Remember, we want to use the right tool for the job.
Recently we began using sandbags in our training. Sandbags are the only tool that offers dynamic variable resistance in your training. In other words, I challenge you to try stabilizing a bag of sand! If you want to use muscles that haven’t been worked in a while, then sandbags are the tool for you. Again, not everyone that trains at Results uses sandbags, we just want to use the right tool for the job.
A couple of years ago we dug deep into the world of calisthenics and became certified in Progressive Calisthenics. This gave us the knowledge to help people workout by only using their bodyweight. Calisthenics are very unique because absolutely everything is scalable to everyone’s level. For example, a beginner can do push-ups against the wall and the highly advanced can work on one-arm push-ups with their feet elevated! Bodyweight training also gives you the chance to bring your workouts home or on vacation so you never have to worry about falling behind. Remember, not everyone at Results trains exclusively with calisthenics. It just gives us another tool in the tool bag to help you be successful.
At the end of the day, we all want to look better, feel younger, and have more enjoyment in life, but not everyone can reach that with the same path. It’s important the trainer you hire has the ability to choose the right tool for your fitness journey. You will run into speed bumps on your trip, so having the ability to navigate around them is huge. Remember, if the only tool you have is a hammer, then every problem looks like a nail.
